Roll on By!

Roller skating is more than just a pastime for my family—it’s a way of life. All of my kids have taken to the rink with incredible ability and passion, but it’s my two boys, Jude and Calvin who have truly embraced the sport, competing nationally and showcasing their skills with pride. As a parent, there’s nothing quite like watching them glide effortlessly across the smooth surface, their passion for skating shining through with every graceful turn.

But our involvement in the roller skating community goes beyond mere participation. Three years ago, I found myself unexpectedly stepping into the role of DJ for Christian Skate Night, held on the first Monday of every month. It all started when my boys’ skate coach approached me with a dilemma—the rink was on the verge of canceling Christian Skate Night due to a lack of a DJ. Knowing that I had a heart for both Christian music and the roller skating community, the coach suggested me as a solution.

I’ll admit, I was hesitant at first. I’m not a professional DJ by any means, but I do have a Spotify Premium account and a passion for sharing uplifting music. So, I took a leap of faith and agreed to press play on some Christian tunes for the night.

What began as a simple act of volunteering has turned into a cherished ministry opportunity for my family. Every Christian Skate Night, I take an opportunity to open the night in a word of prayer and an encouraging Scripture. This past Christian Skate Night I opened the night with a verse from Hebrews 3:13 that reads, “ But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today”, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” After I read that verse I said a word of prayer and as believers in the High Desert we all offered this prayer and agreed by saying in unity, AMEN.

Every month, we eagerly anticipate Christian Skate Night, not just for the skating, but for the chance to come together with fellow believers in a positive and encouraging environment. It’s become a tradition for us to extend invitations to friends and acquaintances, inviting them to experience the joy of fellowship on wheels.

As I reflect on the past three years of serving as the makeshift DJ for Christian Skate Night, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to use my passion for roller skating and music in ministry. It’s a gift that I don’t take lightly, and I’m continually amazed by the connections and community that have blossomed from this monthly gathering.

So, if you’re reading this, consider this your personal invitation to join us at Christian Skate Night on May 6th at Holiday Skate in Victorville from 6:30-9pm. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or just looking for a fun night out, we’d love to have you join us for an evening of fellowship, laughter, and uplifting music. Don’t hesitate to invite your friends and loved ones—everyone is welcome to roll with us!
