Growth Group Guide: "I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life"
John 14:1-6
OPENING PRAYER & Ice Breaker
Icebreaker Question: Share a time when you thought you knew the way somewhere but got completely lost. How did you feel? What did you do?
SERMON RECAP
In this message, Pastor Todd explored Jesus's exclusive claim in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This statement comes during the Last Supper when the disciples' hearts were troubled by Jesus's announcement that He would be leaving them. Jesus responds by calling them to faith—to put their full weight upon Him as the only path to the Father.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Faith is the antidote to a troubled heart - Jesus calls us to "faith" Him (trust, confidence, weight) rather than being agitated by life's circumstances.
Jesus is exclusively sufficient - He is not a way, a truth, or a life—He is THE way, truth, and life.
Our God may be too small and our stories too few - We hesitate to put our weight on God because we don't know Him well enough or haven't practiced trusting Him in smaller things.
Truth is objective reality - In a culture of "my truth" and "your truth," Jesus claims to be THE truth—that which is consistent with reality.
This isn't just theology to defend—it's reality to live - The question isn't just whether we believe Jesus is the only way, but whether we live like it.
Discussion Questions
Understanding the Text
Read John 13 (summary) and John 14:1-6. What was happening that made the disciples' hearts so troubled? How does context help us understand Jesus's response?
In verse 1, Jesus says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." What is the connection between faith and peace in this passage?
Thomas asks, "How can we know the way?" (v. 5). Was this doubt or honest confusion? What does Jesus's response reveal about Himself?
Personal Reflection
"To set in motion that which needs to remain still." When was the last time your heart was truly "troubled" by this definition? What was causing the agitation?
Pastor Todd said, "You hesitate to put your weight upon God because your God is too small and your stories are too few." Which resonates more with you—not knowing God well enough from Scripture, or not having enough personal experiences of trusting Him? Why?
Think about the "50-pound faith" illustration. Where are you currently building your faith muscle? What "small weight" situations is God asking you to trust Him with right now?
Applying the Truth
The Way: Are there areas of your life where you're treating Jesus as a way rather than the way? What other "roads" are you putting your weight on to feel right with God? (Consider: wellness, morality, achievements, artistic expression, etc.)
The Truth: How does our culture's concept of "my truth/your truth" conflict with Jesus's claim to be THE truth? How have you seen this play out in conversations with friends or family?
The Life: Jesus speaks of eternal life with the Father. How does the reality of eternity (heaven and hell) motivate or fail to motivate your daily choices and conversations?
living it out
Pastor Todd asked: "The people in your relational world—are you willing to share that exclusive claim with people who need to hear it?" Who in your oikos (relational world) needs to hear about Jesus as the only way? What makes that conversation feel difficult?
How can we communicate the exclusivity of Jesus with both conviction AND love? What's the difference between being offensive for the gospel and being unnecessarily offensive in how we share it?
What would it look like this week to practically "faith" Jesus—to put your full weight on Him—in one specific area where you're currently troubled?
Practical Application
This Week's Challenge (Choose One or More)
Option 1: Build Your Faith Muscle
- Identify one "50-pound" area where you can trust God this week (something small but real)
- Journal about what happens when you choose to put your weight on Him
- Share your experience with the group next week
Option 2: Know God Better
- Read one chapter from the Gospel of John each day this week
- Write down one thing you learn about who Jesus says He is
- Ask: "How does this make my God bigger?"
Option 3: Share the Exclusive Hope
- Pray daily for one person in your oikos who doesn't know Jesus
- Ask God for an opportunity to have a conversation about spiritual things
- Be prepared to lovingly share why Jesus is the only way
Option 4: Examine Your "Gospel Plus"
- Honestly assess: What am I adding to Jesus to feel right with God?
- Confess any "gospel of wellness," "gospel of morality," or other additions
- Practice resting in the sufficiency of Christ alone
MEMORY VERSE
John 14:6 - "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
