Growth Group Guide: Waiting Well Through Pain

Based on 1 Samuel 1-2: The Story of Hannah

OPENING PRAYER

Begin by asking God to open hearts to hear His voice through seasons of pain and to give wisdom for honest, vulnerable sharing.

ICEBREAKER

Question: Share about a time you had to wait in line for something you really wanted (concert tickets, a ride at an amusement park, a new product release). How did the waiting affect your appreciation for what you eventually received?

SERMON RECAP

Hannah's story teaches us that pain has purpose in God's plan. Through her struggle with infertility, bullying from her rival wife, and years of waiting, Hannah learned that satisfaction isn't about getting what we want—it's about getting God. Her journey shows us how to wait well through pain by pouring out our hearts to God, seeking Him rather than just an outcome, and choosing joy even in difficult circumstances.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Part 1: Hannah's Struggle

The Three B's of Brokenness: The sermon identified brokenness, bullying, and boneheadedness as aspects of Hannah's pain. Which of these resonates most with a painful season you've experienced?
Cultural Pressure: Hannah faced cultural expectations that made her infertility even more painful. What cultural or societal pressures make your current struggles harder to bear?
The "Lightning Lane" of Life: When have you felt like others had the "easy button" while you were stuck waiting? How did that affect your relationship with God?
Hurt People Hurt People: Peninnah bullied Hannah because she herself was hurting (she had children but wasn't loved). How does understanding this principle change how you view people who have hurt you?

Part 2: Hannah's Stand

Taking a Stand: Hannah's stand wasn't aggressive action, it was going to God in prayer. Why do you think we often try everything else before we take our pain to God in prayer?
Prayer as Two-Way Communication: Prayer is about what you take TO the Lord and what you take FROM the Lord. What do you typically bring to God in prayer? What do you receive from Him?
Bargaining vs. Aligning: How would you explain the difference between bargaining with God and aligning with God? Have you ever caught yourself trying to bargain with God?
Peace Before the Answer: Hannah had peace BEFORE she got pregnant. When have you experienced peace from God even when your circumstances hadn't changed yet?

Part 3: Hannah's Son

Waiting Increases Appreciation: "There's something about wading through pain that helps appreciate the good gifts that are so easy to miss when they come easily." Do you agree? Can you share an example from your life?
Sacrificial Obedience: Hannah gave Samuel back to God, putting herself right back where she started—childless. What does her willingness to keep her vow teach you about trusting God?
Satisfaction in God: "Satisfaction isn't about getting what I want, it's about getting God." How does this statement challenge or encourage you in your current season?

Part 4: Hannah's Song

Self-Talk Matters: Paul Tripp said, "No one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do." What does your self-talk sound like during painful seasons? Is it more like worship or worry?
Stop Listening, Start Informing: When have you needed to stop listening to negative self-talk and start informing yourself with truth about God?

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Brokenness is universal – We live in a broken world with broken people, and brokenness causes pain.
Pain has purpose – God uses pain as His megaphone to get our attention and transform us.
Prayer changes us – Hannah's prayer didn't immediately change her circumstances, but it changed her heart and gave her peace.
Waiting reveals what we worship – Do we want God's gifts or do we want God Himself?
Joy is a choice – We don't control our circumstances, but we control our response.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Individual Actions:

1. Choose a Verse (This Week)

Select one Bible verse that anchors you to truth about God's character
Write it on a card and place it where you'll see it daily
Memorize it and return to it when pain or waiting feels overwhelming
Suggested verses: Romans 8:31-32, Psalm 46:1, Isaiah 41:10, Philippians 4:6-7

2. Choose a Song (This Week)

Identify one worship song that reminds you of God's faithfulness
Listen to it daily, especially when you feel overwhelmed
Sing it (even if you can't carry a tune!)

3. Practice Lament (Ongoing)

Set aside time this week to pour out your pain to God honestly
Write a lament prayer or journal entry expressing your hurt
Read Psalm 13, 22, or 42 as examples of biblical lament
Remember: God wants to hear about your pain
Group Commitment:

4. Accountability Partners

Pair up with someone in the group
Share one area where you're currently waiting or in pain
Commit to texting your verse and song to each other this week
Check in: "Are you listening to yourself or informing yourself?"

5. Prayer Focus

Share specific prayer requests related to current seasons of waiting
Pray for each other to "wait well" rather than just pray for the pain to end
Follow up next week on how God met you in your waiting

REFLECTION EXERCISE

Silent Reflection: Give everyone a few minutes to quietly consider these questions:

What pain am I currently experiencing or waiting through?
Am I seeking God or just seeking an outcome?
What is one way I can "wait well" this week?

Optional Sharing: Invite (but don't pressure) people to share their reflections.
