Growth Group Guide: "I Am the Gate" (John 10:1-10)

OPENING PRAYER & Ice Breaker

  • Prayer: Ask someone to open in prayer, asking God to speak through His Word and help the group hear the Shepherd's voice.

  • Icebreaker: Share about a time you got lost trying to find the right gate at an airport, stadium, or event. How did you feel? How did you find your way?

Key Scripture

John 10:1-10 (Focus verses: 7-10)

Main Points Recap

1. Enter by the Gate (Confession, Not Climbing)

  • Religion without Christ only takes from you
  • We can't earn our way in through performance
  • The shepherd's care is more important than the sheep's climb

2. Voices at the Gate (Shepherd vs. Stranger)

  • The shepherd knows us by name; strangers call to crowds
  • We're being discipled by thousands of voices daily
  • We must learn to recognize and trust the Shepherd's voice

3. Blessings from the Gate (Rescue, Freedom, Provision)

  • Saved (rescued from danger)
  • Freedom (come in and go out)
  • Provision (find pasture)

Discussion Questions

Understanding the Text

  1. What's the difference between "climbing" into relationship with God versus "entering through the gate"?
  2. How have you seen this play out in your own life or the lives of others?
  3. Pastor Aaron contrasted "sir prayers" (wanting results) with relationship prayers. Which type of prayers do you find yourself praying most often? Why?
  4. Read the comparison between the shepherd's voice and stranger's voice. Which voices have been competing for your attention lately?

Personal Reflection

  1. Pastor Aaron asked: "Are you at the gate or have you entered the gate?" What does it mean to be "at the gate" but not entered? Where would you honestly say you are?
  2. How much time do you spend in God's Word compared to time on devices/social media? What does this reveal about whose voice you're listening to most?
  3. Pastor Aaron mentioned that sometimes God closes doors for our protection, not punishment. Can you think of a time when God's "no" was actually for your good?

Application

  1. What's one practical step you can take this week to better tune out stranger's voices and tune into the Shepherd's voice?

  2. Who in your "oikos" (relational world) needs to hear about the blessings at the gate? How can you point them to Jesus this week?

  3. Pastor Aaron mentioned that we value God's word more than His wealth. How can we shift from "sir prayers" to relationship-focused prayers?

Key Takeaways

Confession, not climbing - We don't earn our way to God through performance; we enter through humble confession

Know the voice - In a world of thousands of competing voices, we must intentionally learn to recognize the Shepherd's voice through time in His Word

You're invited in - Jesus has already paid the cost for us to enjoy the benefits of the "gated community" - rescue, freedom, and provision

Association isn't salvation - Being at church doesn't mean you're in Christ; relationship matters more than attendance

Practical Applications

This Week's Challenge:

  • Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:

Option 1: Voice Recognition

  • Spend 15 minutes daily in God's Word before checking your phone
  • Journal one thing God spoke to you each day
  • Share with the group next week what you learned about His voice
  • Option 2: Confession Audit

    • Write down areas where you've been "climbing" (trying to earn God's favor through performance)
    • Confess these to God and one trusted person
    • Replace performance-based thinking with gospel truth

    Option 3: Gate Keeper

    • Identify one "stranger's voice" that's been influencing you (social media account, news source, relationship, etc.)
    • Take a break from it for one week
    • Replace that time with Scripture, worship, or Christian community

    Option 4: Oikos Outreach

    • Pray for 3 people in your relational world who need to hear about Jesus
    • Reach out to one of them this week with an invitation to church, coffee, or just to share your story

Closing Reflection Questions

  • What is one thing God is asking you to confess rather than climb?
  • Whose voice have you been listening to more than the Shepherd's?
  • How will you live differently this week because of what you've learned?
