Growth Group Guide: Real Christianity vs. Fake Christianity
Based on Galatians 6:11-18
Galatians Growth Group video : Galatians Pastor Todd
OPENING PRAYER & Ice Breaker
Prayer: Begin by asking God to help your group understand and apply the message of the cross to your lives.
Icebreaker: Share about a time when you worked really hard to accomplish something, only to realize later there was an easier or better way to do it.
Sermon Recap
This message focuses on Paul's concluding words in Galatians, where he emphasizes that real Christianity is centered on the cross of Christ alone, not on our own efforts or religious achievements. Paul contrasts those who rely on what they can do (fake Christianity) with those who boast only in what Christ has done (real Christianity).
Key Scripture: "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." (Galatians 6:14)
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- We fake it when we rely on what we can do - Trying to impress God or others through our own efforts distorts the gospel
- We own it when we boast in what Christ has done - Real Christianity means the cross is everything to us
- We get it when we walk out a gospel mindset - New creations naturally follow Christ, not to earn salvation but because we've been transformed
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Understanding the Message
The Offense of the Cross: Ponder this statement, "If you've never been offended by the message of the cross, you probably haven't thought about it enough." What makes the message of the cross offensive? Have you ever struggled with any aspect of it?
Inward Boasting: Paul talks about boasting only in the cross. What are some things we might "inwardly boast" about (things we tell ourselves make us valuable or significant)? How does this differ from boasting in the cross?
Going Deeper
Religion vs. Relationship: How would you explain the difference between "trusting Christ and following the rules to be saved" versus "trusting Christ to be saved, then following as a new creation"? Why does this distinction matter?
The New Creation: What does it mean to you personally that you are a "new creation" if you've trusted in Christ? What has changed or should change because of this reality?
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Self-Assessment: On a scale of 1-10, how much are you currently relying on your own efforts versus trusting in what Christ has done? What evidence in your life points to your answer?
The "Follow This Rule" Principle: Paul says peace and mercy come to those who "follow this rule" of being a new creation. What does it look like practically to "keep in step" with this reality in daily life?
Getting Back on Track: We all misstep and need to get back on track. Share about a time when you realized you were relying on your own efforts instead of Christ. How did you course-correct?
practical application
This Week's Challenge
Choose one of the following to practice this week:
Option 1: Boasting Audit
- Each day, identify one thing you're tempted to find your significance in (accomplishments, appearance, relationships, morals, etc.)
- Consciously redirect that thought to boasting in the cross instead
- Journal about what changes in your perspective when you do this
Option 2: Gospel Conversations
- Have a conversation with one person this week about what makes Christianity different from other religions
- Practice explaining that it's not about what we do, but what Christ has done
- Share your experience with the group next week
Option 3: New Creation Living
- Identify one area where you've been "trying hard" in your own strength
- Ask God to help you instead "follow" as a new creation, relying on the Holy Spirit
- Notice what's different when you approach it this way
Prayer Focus
Pray for one another in these areas:
- For those who may be realizing they've been relying on their own efforts rather than trusting Christ alone
- For anyone who hasn't yet put their faith in Jesus and what He did on the cross
- For the courage to live as new creations, following the gospel mindset rather than trying to earn God's favor
- For opportunities to share the true message of the cross with others this week
Closing Reflection
Read together as a group:
"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation." (Galatians 6:14-15)
Question: How would your life look different if you truly lived as though "only the cross informs your view of what's truly valuable and important in life"?
