Growth Group Guide: Freedom in Christ
Based on Galatians 5:1-6
Galatians Growth Group video : Galatians Pastor Jackson
OPENING PRAYER
- Begin your time together by asking God to open hearts and minds to His truth, and to reveal any areas where group members may be carrying burdens Jesus died to remove
ICEBREAKER
Share about a time when you experienced freedom from something difficult (a bad habit, a challenging situation, etc.). How did that freedom feel?
KEY TAKEAWAYS From Sermon
Freedom is a gift to guard - Christian freedom isn't about doing whatever we want, but being released from servitude to enjoy a life of satisfaction that wasn't possible before.
Resist forsaking grace by doing works - We cannot earn our justification through our own efforts; attempting to do so nullifies the work of Christ in our lives.
Faith is what counts - Only faith expressing itself through love matters, not our attempts to measure up through religious performance.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Understanding Freedom
How would you define Christian freedom in your own words? How is it different from the world's definition of freedom?
Pastor Jody defined freedom as "the happy state of being released from servitude for a life of enjoyment and satisfaction that was not possible before." Does your Christian life feel like this? Why or why not?
Read John Piper's definition: "Christian freedom is doing what you desire with no regrets a thousand years from now." What activities or choices in your life would pass this test? Which ones wouldn't?
The Danger of Works-Based Religion
Paul warns the Galatians about putting themselves back under "a yoke of slavery." What are some modern-day equivalents to circumcision—things Christians might try to do to earn God's favor?
The "poisoned glass" illustration showed how no amount of good works can make us clean. How does this challenge the way you typically think about your relationship with God?
James 2:10 says breaking one part of the law makes us guilty of all of it. How does this reality drive us to depend on Jesus rather than our own performance?
Living By Faith
Read Galatians 5:5-6. What does it mean that "faith expresses itself through love"? How is this different from trying to earn God's approval?
Pastor Jody asked: "Have you forgotten His grace and turned back to trying to earn His favor?" Where in your life might you be doing this without realizing it?
Paul says we "wait for the hope" rather than "work for the hope." How does this change the way you approach your spiritual life?
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
This Week's Challenge
Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:
Identify Your Yoke: Write down specific areas where you're trying to earn God's approval rather than resting in His grace. Confess these to God and ask Him to remind you of His finished work.
Memorize Scripture: Commit Galatians 5:1 to memory: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Faith Expressing Love: Identify one way you can express your faith through love this week—not to earn anything, but as a response to the grace you've received.
Journal Exercise: Each day this week, write down one way you experienced God's undeserved favor (grace). At the end of the week, review your list and thank Him.
Accountability Partner: Share with one person in the group an area where you struggle with performance-based Christianity. Ask them to pray for you and check in during the week.
Personal reflection
Take a few minutes of silence for personal reflection. Consider these questions:
- What "yoke of slavery" might I be carrying that Jesus died to remove?
- Am I living in the enjoyment and satisfaction of freedom, or in the burden of trying to measure up?
- Where have I forgotten the grace shown to me and started trying to earn God's favor?
Optional: Share insights from your reflection time with the group.
Closing Discussion
For those still "pouring clean water in a poisoned glass":
- Is there anyone here who has never placed their faith in Jesus for the first time?
- Would you be willing to admit you need to be made new, that you can't do this on your own?
- What's holding you back from accepting Jesus' gift of freedom?
Closing Prayer
Pray together as a group, focusing on:
- Thanking God for the freedom we have in Christ
- Confessing areas where we've tried to earn His favor
- Asking for strength to stand firm in grace
- Praying for anyone who needs to accept Christ's gift for the first time
