Growth Group Guide: There Is More - Week 5

"Faith Is a Relationship, Not Rules"

Galatians Growth Group video : Galatians Pastor JODY

 ICEBREAKER question

Icebreaker Question: Have you ever received an inheritance or been present when a will was read? What was that experience like? If not, what do you imagine it would be like?

Sermon Recap

    1. This week, Pastor Todd continued the series "There Is More" by exploring three illustrations from Galatians 3: a will that cannot be changed, a jail that confines, and a guardian (manny) who supervises. Paul uses these illustrations to help us understand that God's promise to Abraham—fulfilled in Jesus—is superior to the law and cannot be altered or improved upon.

      Key Points:

      1. God's promise is unchangeable - Like a will that cannot be altered once established, God's covenant with Abraham stands firm and is fulfilled specifically in Christ (the "seed," singular).

      2. The law's purpose was to expose sin - The law wasn't given to make us righteous but to show us we need a Savior. It's like a measuring stick that reveals we all fall short.

      3. The law was temporary - It served its purpose "until the seed had come." Now that Christ has arrived, we're no longer under the law's supervision.

      4. We are justified by faith, not works - Our right standing with God comes through trusting in Jesus' sacrifice, not through keeping rules or adding to the gospel.

Discussion Questions

Understanding the Sermon
    1. he Will Illustration (vv. 15-18)

      • Why is it significant that Paul emphasizes "seed" (singular) rather than "seeds" (plural) in verse 16?
      • How does understanding God's promise as an unchangeable will affect the way you view salvation?
    2. The Purpose of the Law (vv. 19-22)

      • Before this sermon, how would you have answered the question: "What is the purpose of the law?"
      • Pastor Todd used the illustration of jumping 49 feet vs. comparing ourselves to others. How does this change your understanding of the law's purpose?
    3. The Jail and Guardian Illustrations (vv. 23-25)

      • What does it mean that we were "locked up" and "held in custody" under the law?
      • How is the law like a guardian (manny) who supervised us until we reached maturity in Christ?

Personal Reflection

    1. Rules and Relationship

      • Pastor Todd shared about growing up in a rule-focused church culture. Have you experienced Christianity primarily as rule-keeping? How has that affected your relationship with God?
      • Can you identify with the statement: "When I keep the rules well, I feel like God's child. When I don't, I'm not so sure"? Why or why not?
    2. Measuring Up

      • In what areas of your life do you still find yourself trying to "earn" God's approval rather than resting in what Christ has already done?
      • How does understanding that the law exposes our need (rather than provides our solution) change your daily walk with God?

Application

    1. Freedom in Christ

      • What would it look like for you to live this week in the freedom of being God's child through faith rather than through performance?
      • Are there "rules" in your Christian community that you've confused with the gospel itself? How can you distinguish between biblical commands for holy living and legalism?
    2. Sharing the Gospel

      • Pastor Todd mentioned praying for people in your "oikos" (sphere of influence). Who in your life is still trying to earn righteousness through religion or good works?
      • How can you pray specifically for them this week? (Example prayers: "God, bring them to the end of themselves" or "Help them realize they simply need You")

  • Practical Applications

    • Choose one or more of these action steps for the week:

      1. Receive it by faith - If you've been trying to earn God's approval, spend time in prayer confessing this and receiving His grace anew. Journal about what it means that you are already fully accepted in Christ.

      2. Stop trying to earn right standing - Identify one area where you're still trying to earn God's favor through rule-keeping. Write down the gospel truth that counters this lie and memorize it.

      3. Pray for your oikos - Make a list of 3-5 people in your sphere of influence who need to hear the gospel. Commit to praying for them daily using the prayers Pastor Todd suggested.

      4. Study the promise - Read Genesis 12, 15, and 17 to see God's covenant with Abraham. Notice how it's always about what God will do, not what Abraham must do.

      5. Memorize Scripture - Commit Galatians 3:22 to memory: "But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe."

    Closing Reflection

    Read together: Romans 3:20-24

      • Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

Reflection Question: How does this passage summarize what we've learned tonight?

    Prayer Requests & Closing Prayer

    • Share prayer requests related to living in gospel freedom
    • Pray for those in your oikos who need to hear the good news
    • Thank God for the unchangeable promise fulfilled in Christ
    • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you rest in what Jesus has already accomplished
