Growth Group Guide: Walking in the Spirit vs. Walking in the Flesh
Based on Galatians 5:16-26
Galatians Growth Group video : Galatians Pastor matt
OPENING PRAYER
Begin by asking God to open hearts and minds to understand what it means to walk in step with the Spirit.
ICEBREAKER
Question: Share one thing you've tried to change about yourself through sheer willpower. What was the result?
KEY TAKEAWAYS From Sermon
1. Mutually Exclusive Realities
- Walking in the Spirit and fulfilling the desires of the flesh cannot happen at the same time
- This is not about two equal opposing forces—the Spirit is more powerful than the flesh
- The flesh cannot beat the flesh, but the Spirit can
2. The Acts of the Flesh
- These behaviors are obvious and descriptive, not a checklist
- The warning is about habitual practice (the Greek word "proso"), not isolated failures
- Those who consistently live this way are separated from God
3. The Fruit of the Spirit
- This is singular fruit with nine characteristics, not nine separate fruits
- These qualities are descriptive of Spirit-led living, not a to-do list
- The fruit is produced by surrender to the Spirit, not by trying harder
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Understanding The Text
What does it mean that the Spirit and the flesh are "mutually exclusive"? How does this challenge the idea that we can compartmentalize our lives?
Read Galatians 5:16-18. Why do you think Paul uses the word "walk" to describe our spiritual life? What does this suggest about the Christian life?
The sermon emphasized that "fruit" is singular, not plural. How does this change the way you view the fruit of the Spirit? What's wrong with the "bowl of fruit" approach?
Paul warns about those who "live like this" (v. 21), referring to habitual practice. How do we distinguish between struggling with sin and habitually practicing sin?
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
This Week's Challenge
Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:
Option 1: Daily Confession, Reconciliation, Submission
- Set aside 10 minutes each day
- Confess specific sins and misaligned desires
- Thank Jesus for His blood that covers that sin
- Submit one specific area to the Spirit's control
Option 2: Fruit Examination
- Pick one characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit
- Each day, journal: "Where did I try to produce this through effort?" and "Where did I see the Spirit produce this through surrender?"
Option 3: Abiding Practice
- Choose a verse from Galatians 5:16-26 to memorize
- Throughout the day, pause and ask: "Am I in step with the Spirit right now?"
Personal reflection
"It's not salvation by grace and then sanctification by grit." Where in your life have you been trying to produce spiritual fruit through willpower rather than surrender?
Look at the list of the acts of the flesh (vv. 19-21). Without being overly introspective or condemning, are there areas where you recognize habitual patterns that concern you? (Leaders: create a safe space; no one should feel pressured to share specifics)
Review the fruit of the Spirit (vv. 22-23). Which characteristics do you most long to see evidenced in your life? Why those specifically?
"Where have I not submitted to the Spirit?" Take a moment of silence to consider this question personally. What comes to mind?
Accountability and Prayer
Share with one other person: What is one specific way you want to surrender to the Spirit this week?
Prayer in pairs or small groups:
- Pray for surrender rather than striving
- Pray for awareness of the Spirit's leading
- Pray for the fruit of the Spirit to be evidenced in each person's life
- Pray for anyone who may be questioning their salvation based on this passage
Closing Thought
"The only way that these qualities are going to be evidenced in our lives is because of the presence and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit that has taken up residence in us."
Remember: This isn't about trying harder. It's about surrendering more fully to the Spirit who already lives in you.
